Dr. S. K. Biswal has obtained B. Sc. Engg. in Chemical Engineering from NIT, Rourkela and M. S. from BITS, Pilani. He was awarded Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur. He is presently working as Chief Scientist and Head of Mineral Processing Dept. at Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar in the area of Mineral Processing. He has one year industrial experience prior to join R&D organization in Chloro-alkali industry. He has more than 29 years R&D experience in the field of Mineral Processing relating to comminution, processing various low grade ores/coal/minerals, specialization in column flotation and plant optimization. He has transferred his technologies to pilot and commercial scales for beneficiation of graphite, coal, iron ore, phosphate, barite and antimony ores. He has published more than 60 technical papers in national and international journals. He has published more than 130 technical papers in national and international symposiums. He has delivered number of invited talks more than 50 at various institutes and organsiations. He has handled more than 150 national and international sponsored projects from different agencies in the area of mineral processing. He has guided nine students for their M.Tech. thesis and one Ph.D. student. He is guiding 5 Ph.D. students in different fields in mineral processing. In his credit there are 12 national patents. He has got many national awards from different professional societies/organizations like National Mineral Award from Govt. of India, Mineral Beneficiation Award from IIME, MECON Award from IIM, Govinda Gupta Memorial Award from Institution of Engineers, SGAT Excellence award etc. He is council/executive members in various professional societies. He is author of chapters in different books. He was also working for short period as Adjunct Faculty in the Dept. of Mining and Mineral Resources Engineering, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA. He is Members of Editorial Board in Journal of Sustainable Planet, India and International Journal of Mining Engineering & Technology, China He is also Honorary Board Member of different Institutes/Organisation and member in different Committees of Ministries of Govt. of India. He has organized national and international symposiums in different capacities. He has been nominated as Expert Member in State Appraisal Committee by Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India for State of Odisha. He is Member of Research Council in R&D Centre of Essar Group, Hazira. He has been elected as Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2015.

Started his carrier from Vizag Steel in 1987 followed by long stint at JSW Steel Bellary, Kalyani Carpenter Special Steel Pune and Electrotherm India Ltd. Gujarat. Presently with Usha Martin Limited Jamshedpur as President (Steel Division). He has a long stint of 29 years in Steel Industry.
He has commissioned / stabilized several green field projects at JSW, Capacity enhancement projects at Kalyani Steel, Electrotherm India Ltd. and Usha Martin. He was instrumental in productivity improvements in all the plants where he worked. Under his leadership, JSW Steel Converter Shop achieved highest converter lining life of 13000 heats.
He has visited several Steel Plants worldwide like – Zapsib Steel Plant Russia, Baosteel China, Linz and Donawitz Austria, Thyssenkrupp Germany, JFF Steel & Aichi Steel Japan, Carpenter Technology USA, Port Albert & Lanwarn Works of Tata Corus.
