Bengluru’s Sivananda Bridge to Steal the Show

10 July 2017

Project on the first steel flyover in B’luru was conceptualised in 2011. After a prolonged delay, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will start steel flyover project at Shivananda Circle in mid-July, which will take another nine months to complete.

It can be recalled the state cabinet had given approval for revising tender amount for the steel flyover construction cost to Rs 19.85 crore last month. After conceptualising the project, the BBMP had also issued tender for the project in the year 2014 estimating that construction would cost Rs 11.48 crore.

BBMP commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said, “The tender has already been approved. The project will start by mid-July. There is no need to divert the traffic as the project will be carried during night time. Required steel fabrications are sourced from the factory and assembled at the construction site. Unlike other concrete structure, this project will not take much time to execute and won’t cause inconvenience to motorists.” The official added that this kind of steel grade separators has been built in Goa, Kolkata and other cities.

If everything goes as planned, the BBMP will build the steel flyover along Hare Krishna Road (four lanes bi-directional). The length of the flyover is 326.25 meters. The BBMP will acquire 1,500 square meter of land for the project. The proposed project will help the traffic coming from Race Course Circle to move towards Sheshadripuram Railway under bridge without stopping at the Shivananda Circle.

The circle is located close to Vidhana Soudha, Race Course, Kumara Krupa Guest House, CM’s residence, hotels and other places. The traffic moving toward Kumarakrupa Road gets piled up near the circle because the existing road is narrow.

However, the project will come with environmental cost. The BBMP is likely to cut down 26 trees to build the flyover. The BBMP is utilising the fund under Nagarothana Scheme of state government. Total cost of the project is Rs 50 crore which will include compensation for the land acquired.

The BBMP has recently issued a tender project management and consultancy services for supervision, quality control of the work and others. The official said that a third party agency will be chosen to supervise the project.

The tender issued states that project is a grade separator. Once this project gets executed, this could be the first steel flyover in the city.
