US weekly coal output fell by 32.4% from previous week: EIA data

The US, world’s second largest coal producers have produced an estimated 10.5 million short tons (mmst) of coal for the week ending December 30, 2017, EIA said in its latest report. According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 32.4% lower than last week’s estimate and 28.1% lower than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2016.

East of the Mississippi River produced an estimated 4 mmst (down 31.03% w/w) and west of the Mississippi River produced an estimated 6.5 mmst (down 34.02% w/w) according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on January 4, 2018.

Furthermore, US year-to-date (as of December 30, 2017) coal production totalled at an estimated 770.9 mmst, 6.1% higher than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2016.

Moreover, the coal exports from the US for the first three quarters of 2017 were 69 mmst, 68% (28 mmst) higher than exports for the same period in 2016. This total for the first three quarters of 2017 is already 14% (8 mmst) higher than total annual coal exports in 2016. EIA expects that exports will total 89 mmst in 2017 and 74 mmst in 2018.
