Chinese steel exports to Japan keep growing

10-December-2018

Chinese exports of carbon and special steel to Japan rose again in October, new data from the Japan Iron & Steel Federation show, with exports of wire rods continuing to register particularly strong growth. South Korea remains by far the largest source of Japan’s steel imports, however.

Traditionally, Japan is an extremely hesitant importer of steel. Total imports last October (including ferroalloys and pig iron) reached just 843,000 tonnes, the JISF data show, though this was up by 25% on year. Within the total, imports of carbon steel were higher by 22% on year at 442,500 tonnes.
