Coal to hot metal ratio must increase

Steel manufacturing experts in India and abroad feel there is a need to increase the coal to hot metal ratio in order to make the industry more viable and profitable. In a two-day operating committee meet on coal, coke and coal chemicals, organised by Research and Development Centre in Iron and Steel (RDCIS), SAIL, various measures were discussed for improving the efficiency of coke used in steel manufacturing; scientific papers were also presented.

Scientist Shioshi Kanagaye, Nippon steel and Sumitomo Engineering, Japan, said the coke dry cooling plant (CDCP) technology must be used effectively under Indian conditions to produce good quality of coke. Experts from 18 different steel organization participated in the two-day 47th operating committee meeting which concluded on Thursday. Steel plants of Bhilai, Burnpur, Bokaro, Rourkela were among others who participated in the programme.
