Government maps duty impact on downstream aluminium sector

21 November 2016

Government has decided to study the impact on the downstream aluminium sector before it goes ahead with any sort of duty protection for primary aluminium makers.

“We have asked Mecon to study the downstream sector for aluminium as they might get affected with the rise in duty. They (Mecon) have suggested imposition of Minimum Import Price on imported aluminium,” Union Mines Secretary Balvinder Kumar told PTI.

Mecon is supposed to submit the impact report on secondary and downstream aluminium industry in a month’s time and then the Centre will take a final call, he said.

The Centre is considering duty protection measures for the domestic aluminium sector which is facing dumping of products from countries like China.

“We are working to provide safeguard duty protection for primary aluminium producers being hurt from dumping,” Kumar had said earlier.

In a notification, the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) had earlier said it had found prima facie evidence of dumping of aluminium from China.
