Heavy rains hit South African manganese ore output, leaving spare logistics capacity

20 February 2017

Heavy rains have curbed output at South African manganese ore miners in recent weeks, prompting them to delay shipments and even forfeit shipping slots.

Miners affected by the rains have been selling out of stocks and are being offered more shipping slots than they need while their stocks run low, sources said. “There has been a lot of rain in the northern Cape, which has affected production, so some miners are potentially short stock and delaying shipments,” told sources, unfortunately for manganese ore suppliers, the slowdown in mining is unlikely, at least in the immediate future.
