India’s crude steel output up 4.5% in Apr-May FY18

The Indian steel sector has grown rapidly over the past few years and presently it is the third largest steel producer globally, contributing to about 2% of the country’s GDP.
The Indian steel sector has grown rapidly over the past few years and presently it is the third largest steel producer globally, contributing to about 2% of the country’s GDP. India has also crossed 100 MT mark for production for sale in 2016-17.
India has produced 16.391 million tonne (MT) of crude steel in the first two months of the FY18, higher by 4.5% on Y-o-Y basis. It had produced 15.683 MT in the same period of FY17, as reported by the leading business news agency.
Crude steel output for the month of May stood at 8.163 MT, higher by 2.2%, from 7.989 MT in the previous year, as given in the latest Joint Plant Committee (JPC) report. However, for the month of April, crude steel output was down by around 0.8% at 8.228 MT on a month-on-month basis.
SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL and JSPL together produced 9.292 MT during April-May 2017, which was a growth of 8% over same period of last year, the rest 7.099 MT came from the other producers, reported leading news agency.
