China’s iron ore imports rose 11 percent in September from a year earlier to a record high, according to Reuters calculations based on customs data on Friday, even as steel mills in the world’s top producer prepared for winter production cuts.

For the year to date, imports were 817 million tonnes, up 7.1 percent, a statement from the General Administration of Customs showed. It did not give a September number.

Reuters calculations showed arrivals last month reached 103 million tonnes, up from 92.99 million tonnes a year ago and 88.66 million tonnes in August.
