Argentina’s market demand falls 4% YoY in May

Argentine cement consumption decreased by 4.4 per cent to 924,979t in May 2018, according to AFCP, the country’s cement association. When compared with the previous month, demand contracted by 3.5 per cent from 958,184t in April.
Of this total, the domestic industry supplied 924,425t, three per cent less MoM, while imports fell from 5160t in April to 554t as Argentina’s producers recovered market share. Compared with May 2017, Argentina’s producers saw their domestic sales ease by 3.9 per cent from 961,786t in May 2017. Imports in May 2017 reached 5932t.
Total dispatches fell to 930,392t from 957,924t in April 2018 and from 966,981t in May 2017, representing decreases of 2.9 and 3.8 per cent, respectively. Domestic producers saw their export volumes rise 21.8 per cent from 4900t in April 2018 to 5967t in May 2018. In May 2017 exports stood at 5195t.
For the first five months of 2018 Argentina’s cement demand climbed 9.5 per cent YoY from 4.512Mt in 5M17 to 4.942Mt. Of this total some 60,576t was imported, quintupling the import volumes of 19,978t reported in 5M17.
In 5M18 total dispatches by the country’s producers advanced 8.6 per cent to 4.915Mt from 4.525t in the equivalent period of the previous year. Exports edged up 3.9 per cent from 32,493t in 5M17 to 33,758t.
