Indonesia coal exports rise 13% in first half

Indonesia’s coal exports rose 13% year on year in January-June amid strong Asia-Pacific demand and high export prices, Bank Indonesia data showed on Wednesday.

The world’s leading thermal coal exporter shipped 209.6m tonnes over the six-month period, with June exports up 25% on the year at a three-month high of 1.19m tonnes/day.

Indonesian coal reference prices averaged USD 96.50/t in the first half, up by 7.5% on the year, in part driven by limitations to China’s coal production, which had triggered higher import demand, Montel reported.

Indeed, Chinese coal imports – from all origins – over the period were up 9% at 145.5m tonnes, while production slipped 1% to 1.7bn tonnes, official data showed.
