5-Nov-2018

The Port of Rotterdam saw coal throughput of 18.98 million mt in the first nine months of the year, down 4.6% year on year, the port operator said on its website.

The share of thermal coal in the total volume was not disclosed.

In the first nine months of the year, 18.48 million mt of coal arrived into the port, down 4.9% from the year-ago period.

Outgoing coal volumes stood at 500,000 mt, an increase of 6.9% year on year.

“The demand for fuel coal decreased as a result of the extraordinarily warm summer, the rising price of CO2 emission allowances and further growth in the renewable energy segment,” the port operator said.

According to Platts trade flow software cFlow, 54 coal laden/part-laden vessels arrived into Rotterdam so far in October, of which 14 were from the Baltic ports, three from South Africa and 10 from the US.
