US coal production dips 3% from prior week: EIA

Weekly US coal production totalled an estimated 14.5 million st in the week ended June 23, down 3% from the prior week and 5.4% from the year-ago week, data from the US Energy Information Administration showed Thursday.

Production in Wyoming and Montana, which is mostly made up of output from the Powder River Basin, totalled an estimated 6.46 million st, down 2.6% from the prior week and 1.7% from the year-ago week.

On an annualized basis, production in the two states would total 336.8 million st, down 4.2% from last year.

In Central Appalachia, weekly production totalled an estimated 1.9 million st, down 2% from the week prior and 1.8% from last year. Annualized production would total 97.6 million st, up 6.6% from 2017.

Output from northern Appalachia totalled an estimated 1.9 million st, down 5% from the prior week and 12.9% compared with last year. Annualized production would total 101 million st, down 3.9% from last year.

In the Illinois Basin, production totalled an estimated 1.7 million st, down 3.1% from the week prior and 10.9% from last year. Annualized production in the basin would total 102.8 million st, down 0.8% from 2017.

Through the first 25 weeks of the year, US coal production totals an estimated 362.3 million st, and would total an estimated 753 million st on an annualized basis, down 2.7% from last year.
